      How does data recovery work?

Loss of data in storage devices remains a cause of concern for users and businesses alike. Data is a most critical asset in today’s digital world and any loss of important data can lead to financial, legal, and emotional trouble.

Fortunately, any information stored on a storage media is almost always recoverable. The process of recovery of inaccessible data, due to the device’s logical or physical failure is known as “Data Recovery.”

Let us look at the logical and physical device failures and see the different ways data loss can happen.

Logical failures: Data loss due to accidental data deletion, drive formatting, volume deletion, drive corruption, boot failure, reinstallation of an operating system, etc. comes under logical failure.

Physical failures:Data loss due to bad areas in the physical storage space, connectivity issue, component damage, electronic equipment malfunction, etc. are a few examples of physical failures.

A Data Recovery process scans for lost files in the storage devices and retrieves them successfully. This is how data recovery software works. It recovers data from various storage devices, such as internal storage drive of laptop or desktop, external hard disk drive, solid-state drive, USB flash drive, an optical storage medium (CD/DVD/BD), and memory card (SD, SDHC, SDXC).

      Understanding Data Loss

When you delete files from its stored location, you don’t lose them irreversibly. You can find these files in Recycle Bin (Windows) and Trash (Mac) folders. From here, you can easily restore the deleted files to their original locations.

Even if you delete files from Recycle Bin/Trash, the files aren’t lost permanently. These files are still present in your storage medium and can be recovered bydata recovery software. The same applies to other logical and physical data loss situations.

      What makes Data Recovery possible?

During the deletion or formatting process, all operating systems are designed to maximize the speed of computing. This means that the OS would remove the references of the deleted files on the existing file system(or recreate a new file system) instead of permanently erasing the files by overwriting them. Overwriting takes more computing resources and time, which is why an OS would do deletion instead of erasure.

So when data in a drive is deleted or formatted, it is not removed from the storage drive. Instead, the data remains intact in the storage medium in an inaccessible state ready to be overwritten by new data. This marooned data can be retrieved by using a data recovery software that uses file signatures to scan the entire storage drive bit by bit.

      Why Data Recovery?

Data recovery helps you to preserve your personal and official data. Imagine losing your treasured digital memories like photos, videos, voice recordings, etc. A data recovery tool can help you avoid emotional distress. Or consider losing critical business documents, project files, software, etc. Permanent loss of such information can be devastating to your career. A data recovery tool becomes your ally in such a situation.

Scope and limitations of Data Recovery

It’s not easy to recover data from certain new hardware introduced in the market. E.g. data recovery is not possible in a Solid State Drive, which has TRIM command enabled. The deleted data in such drives is erased permanently. For SSD’s where TRIM is disabled, data recovery is possible. The same applies to external SSDs.

Data recovery can be difficult or impossible when,

      1) Data has been overwritten

      2) Data is corrupt (it is possible to recover corrupt data in some cases but it is difficult)

      3) Data is present in a bad sector of the drive.

How to prevent loss of data?

Prevention is always better than cure, and backing up your data prevents you from permanent data loss.

Creating a backup in an external USB device and regularly updating it is a great data hygiene practice. Another option is to create a backup in the Cloud. You can use Windows OneDrive, iCloud or third-party services such as Dropbox, Zoho, etc. The biggest advantage of having a cloud backup is the flexibility you get to access your data anytime and on any device. Plus, the security of your data becomes the responsibility of the cloud vendor. Cloud backup services are usually paid services, so please compare the prices and features before opting for a plan.

Loss of data can also occur due to virus attacks. Having a good anti-virus software can shield your computer from the virus and help you preserve your valuable data.

To avoid data loss due to power surges, it is advisable to have a UPS..

      Finally

You can lose your valuable information stored on your storage device at any point in time. There are various scenarios such as accidental deletion, virus attacks, software crashes, physical damage, etc. which can lead to loss of data and lead to emotional distress. To avoid such consequences, you should take regular backup of your data.

In the absence of data back-up,you can opt for an efficient Data recovery solution like Stellar Windows Data Recovery. It is a professional tool that uses advanced techniques to recover data from any loss scenario. The free version of the software can recover up to 1 GB of your data. If you wish to recover more data, then you can opt for the paid versions.

      1. Hi,
I was transferring data from old Hard Drive to new one. While transferring one partition successfully I erased it from the older HD. Soon I realized that I mistakenly deleted the wrong partition (Which was yet to be transferred). Is there any way to recover that partition data? It carries very important files. Will it be possible?

        1. Hi,

It’s absolutely possible using partition recovery tools, available for free download. You can choose either free or paid utility (Generally comes with higher performance and better scanning mechanism) to recover the same.

Recovery programs require you to follow simple steps to get your lost or accidentally formatted volumes recovered such as : Select drive, click on ‘Search lost volume’ and save the recoverable items.

Note: Avoid using the drive till you’ve recovered everything that’s important.

          Let us know your progress!!

      2. I read on a popular blog that freezing the hard drive actually worked in extracting all files from the drive. Though, you have to throw the drive away after restoration of data is successful. Freezing doesn’t guarantee the recovery but can help at times.

        1. This is something ruining all the chances of survival and making your drive too bad to be recovered by experts. I’d better recommend to avoid this technique if the stored data is too sensitive and you really don’t want to create a mess.

      3. my hard disc got corrupted and its not getting recovered as my computer person told me that its media is not responding. pl let me know how can i get my data recovered

        1. Hi Sunit,

I understand your situation and try to keep this solution as easy as possible.

Open ‘My Computer’ and see if you may able to see the problem hard drive. If not, Open ‘Disk Management’ (right click on ‘My Computer’ and choose ‘Manage’). If the drive is still not visible anywhere, consider asking for help from data recovery experts using email: support@stellarinfo.com or Phone: +1-877-778-608

However, if the drive is visible, you have high chances of getting all your files recovered. Consider downloading Stellar partition recovery software from here .

P.S. You can also try connecting the problem hard drive externally using SATA/USB adapter and see if the drive can be detected by your computer.

Install and run a complete hard drive scan after which, you’d be able to see the preview of recoverable items. Press on ‘Recover’ button to finally save your files and folders to your desired destination.

Note: You’ll need to purchase the license key worth $99 to activate the software and could able to save the recoverable items.

Feel free to ask if there is anything else you need help with.

      4. Hi,

I have a very big problem with my pen drive. Whenever i plug it into my PC, it opens but I can’t see any of my file/folders in it. Also, the properties is showing zero bytes of data stored in it. What I’m doing wrong or why the heck this happened with perfectly running USB device.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

        1. Dear Elija,

Thanks for stopping by. The USB drive seems corrupt and you may not able to access it as you should. Consider recovering your files first and then switch to complete format the drive.

Download recovery programs from the trusted source like Stellar and install it on your PC. Run a full USB scan using the software and see if you may able to see preview of any recoverable items. If you see the desired items, press on ‘Recover’ button located at the lower left corner of the screen to finally recover your desired items.

P.S. You can also try running CHKDSK on the problem drive and see if it may fix the issue.

          Please share your progress.

      5. Yesterday, my external hard drive became inaccessible all of a sudden I don’t know why, after connecting to the system and started throwing error message ‘Data Redundancy Check’ when I tried to recover some important files.

How can I get my data back now? Please suggest some way.

        1. Stop using the drive immediately and take it to data recovery expert. The drive has clear signs of permanent failure and you might not another chance to resurrect important files form the failing media.

Data recovery experts will use highly equipped clean room to treat the sensitive data. You’ll get a free evaluation of your drive to ensure that how much of your files can be recovered. Keep in mind that, data recovery services might cost you lot more than using do-it-yourself recovery programs.

          Good luck for your future.

      6. Is it possible to recover data that has moved from computer hard drive to USB drive that doesn’t work anymore? USB drive asks to format it first before i can start using it but I’m afraid that it’ll erase all the stored data.
I have tried some software like Recuva but the recovered items are meaningless can couldn’t be accessed.
Can you please suggest anything that will be helpful for me?

        1. Don’t format the drive and keep the USB safe from doing wrong attempts of recovering your lost files. Try Stellar software, one of the most powerful recovery programs that offers advanced scanning mechanism and recoverability of lost or inaccessible items from series of storage devices available nowadays.

You may able to see the preview of recoverable items before getting them actually recovered. It’s all up to you to pay or not to.

          Good luck!!

      7. I recently transferred (Cut and paste method) 10-12 excel workbooks to an external hard drive that seems inaccessible now. Doesn’t matter which way i try, nothing seems to be able to fix it.

Is there any methods/tips that can help me to recover the excel files?

        1. Dear Mikko,

Transferred excel files can still be recovered using data recovery software. Connect your drive to the working computer and run complete scan using the recovery programs and see if they may able to detect the lost excel files.

Keep in mind that different software carry different capabilities. It’s recommended to use only advanced programs like TestDisk or Stellar.

      8. I have severely damaged hard-disk (Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive), anyway to recover 280 Gb of data in one go without loss?

P.S. – My HDD is not in warranty 🙁

        1. Hi Thomas,

Check and make sure the drive is visible under ‘Disk Management’ (Right click on My computer and choose to manage). This is to ensure that the drive can be detected by the recovery programs that I’m going to mention.

Download Stellar Partition Recovery from the official webpage and install it on your machine: Download Link

As soon as you start the software, you can see your problem drive listed under ‘Drive Recovery’ tab (if the drive isn’t listed, consider changing the USB Port or the USB cable ). Click to select the problem drive and subsequent recovery methods like ‘Advance Recovery’ or ‘RAW Recovery’ and let the software scan the drive. You’d be able to see the recoverable items using preview window. Check mark the box and click on ‘Recover’ to save the desired items.

Feel free to ask if there is anything else you’d want to know.

      9. Hi Betty,

Download Stellar Partition Recovery Software and install it on your PC. Once installed, you can manually select the targeted PST files to extract data from or let software scans the entire storage drive region to find any lost or deleted PST files. Later, you would be able to see the details and data stored on the PST files and you could save it to your desired locations.

This is the easiest and most successful method to recover whatever you’ve lost like emails, database records, files, photos, audio, videos etc.

Do let us know if you need any more help!!

      10. I have an USB drive which is not detected by my computer. Can I recover data from this inaccessible USB?

        1. Yes, data recovery from the inaccessible USB is possible. Download Stellar Software (website url) then and download and run it from the desktop. Start a full system scan and let the system detect all the recoverable items.

Soon, you’d be able to see and recover all your important files out of the inaccessible USB.

          Good luck!!
