When it comes to formatting a USB drive, which format should you go for – FAT or NTFS? Or any other? Moreover, how can you change the format size of your USB drive from FAT to NTFS to exFAT or FAT32? Let’s answer these questions one at a time.

      file system

In most Windows systems, while formatting a USB 4 file system choices are presented to you – NTFS, FAT, FAT32 or exFAT. You should choose one that suits your USB purpose as well as target environment. Additionally, here are the benefits of each of these file systems to help you make your choice.

      Benefits of NTFS file system

If you select NTFS file system, you get:

      • Better disk space management.
      • Less space wastage.
      • Increased reliability and security with file encryption.
      • Small data clusters.
      • Compressed data so as to save disk space.
      • Ability to create permissions for individual files and folders.
      • Ability to read / write files larger than 32GB and up to maximum partition size.

Benefits of FAT / FAT32 file system

Note: For USB flash drives with capacity larger than 32GB, FAT / FAT32 formatting option is not available.

If you select FAT or FAT32 file system:

      • Faster performing USB owing to write operations lesser.
      • Less memory usage.
      • Quick disk scanning.
      • Compatibility with almost all operating systems.
      • Less space is dedicated to the file system data to allow more free space to hold other data.

      Benefits of exFAT file system

If you select exFAT file system, you get:

      • Ability to create partitions larger than 32GB.
      • Better disk space management.
      • Ability to read / write files larger than 4GB.

So if you’re USB flash drive which has a capacity greater than 32GB, you should select NTFS or exFAT. Other than that, you should choose the format that suits your work. For example, if you use the USB on multiple operating systems, going for FAT would be better.

        • For FAT: format E: /fs:FAT
        • For FAT32: format E: /fs:FAT32

      1. Hi I bought 2 t.b usb .it is not formatting in ntfs file system.it show exfat32 as default. And when ever i try to change the file system from exfat to ntfs it showing error. Can you help me.i am using Windows 10 operating system

          1. I have the same issue and I have been trying to format with command prompt but for an hour it has just sat there saying 0 percent completed. Is that normal for the format to take so long for 2TB drive?

          2. You can check with the above solution and of still problem persists then take the help of a third party format tool.

        1. What kind of difficulty are you facing while formatting? Choose file system FAT or FAT32 and then see.

      2. What do I click in allocation unit size…it changed automatically when I changed the file system from ntfs to exist from default to 256 kB …do I leave it?

      3. Hi. I bought an OTG Sandisk flashdrive today. I put some movies on it and it was okay on my computer. But when I inserted it on my phone, the otg doesn’t work and it reads on my phone “blank space memory”. I checked the otb and it’s in exFAT format. How can i fix it? thanks.

        1. I do not know your Phone brand, but certain OTG Sandisk flash drive do not support exFat. You can format the drive in Fat32 file system after taking a backup. Also please ensure that your flash drive is fully inserted into the microUSB port on your phone and your phone is fully charged.

      4. Thanks for the mail, it will be most appreciated if you can name some third party tools for format – fat32 to exFAT
the size of the usb being larger than 32gb

        Thanks

        1. I guess there are many program available if you search online. I know about a good freeware “HP USB Disk Format Tool” which is available in cnet also. Although you can try the mentioned tool, nevertheless, I am sure there may be better also.

        1. The best method to “unformat” a drive is to recover everything from it and save it to an another drive. Next, reformat the drive and give it a fresh start.

          1. i have a plug & play usb, i store movies on the drive, but I got a message “file not supported” also am not able to format my usb to exFAT, the options for format are not displayed, what should i do?

          2. Hello Siddharth, probably the application doesn’t support the media file which you are trying to play or the media file might be corrupt. Also if you have tried the above methods and still cannot format the USB drive, then i suggest you to download a third party USB formatter/format tool to format your USB to exFAT. There are free USB format tool available online.

      5. My pen drive(Transcend 8gb) is not accessible.
“Location is not available” dialog is coming up.
The text in the dialog reads as:
The volume doesn’t contain a recognized file system.
Please make sure that all the required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted.

I have all the steps mentioned here to repair it but was unable to do. Please help me out.

        1. Hi Kiran, please know that Windows recognize FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS while Mac recognizes HFS and exFAT. So it is required for your computer to know the file system/format of your plugged in device, else it will show the volume as corrupted. If you still cannot find a solution, then check your device in linux.

      6. My USB flash drive is not showing up in my computer although it is connected. I looked in Start > Computer > Right click > Manage > Disk management, but nothing is showing up. What may be the issue?

        1. Hi Steve,

It might be possible that your external hard drive and local drive have same name. I would suggest you to change your drive letter and reconnect your external hard drive. See if this can help you.

          Thanks,

        1. You can Double-click on the WriteProtect value which is displayed at the right-hand pane of Regedit.exe. You have to change the value from 1 to 0 and save the change. After that restart your computer. Whenever you connect your USB 2nd time, you find it no longer Write protected.
