Method to Export GroupWise Address Book to Microsoft Outlook

When using the Novell GroupWise email platform, there can be several situations that may call for exporting GroupWise Address Book to Microsoft Outlook.

For instance, you may want to migrate all GroupWise contacts to an offline Outlook account. Or, a user might want access to GroupWise Address Book through his Outlook account, without GroupWise client installation.

But, the GroupWise Address Book file has a .nab extension (NAB refers to Novell Address Book) which is not supported by Outlook. To continue with the export process, you will need to convert the NAB file to a file format supported by Outlook.

Note: Both platforms can exist within the same organization, however, it is not recommended. This is because both have different underlying architectures and they use different protocols.

Export GroupWise Address Book to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003

You can manually export GroupWise Address Book to Outlook in two stages:

Stage 1 – Export GroupWise Address Book to CSV File Format.

Step 1: Launch GroupWise, and click Address Book on the toolbar.

Step 2: Choose the Address book to be exported.

Step 3: Go to File menu, and then click Export.

Step 4: In the dialog box that appears, click Entire Address Book.

Step 5: Type a name for the Address Book you want to export, and then select the desired location to save the file.

Step 6: From the Save as type drop-down list, choose Comma Separated (*.csv) file format, and then click Save.

Performing the above steps will save an address book in NAB format to CSV file format.

Stage 2 – Import CSV File into Outlook.

Step 1: Launch MS Outlook.

Step 2: Select the File menu, click Open & Export, and then click Import/Export.

Step 3: In the Import and Export Wizard, choose ‘Import from another program or file’, and then select Next.

Step 4: In the Import a File dialog box, choose ‘Comma Separated Values’, and then click Next.

Step 5: Browse to select the CSV file, and then Next.

Step 6: Select the Contacts folder to import GroupWise Address Book contacts from the CSV file, and hit Next.

Step 7: Click Finish.

Executing these steps will move the selected GroupWise Address Book to Outlook. 

Problems Associated with Manual Method

• It only allows to export GroupWise Address Book/Contacts to Outlook. You need to perform different steps to export other mailbox folders such as Inbox, Sent Mail, etc.
• Does not support direct export of GroupWise mailbox to Outlook.
• It does not guarantee data integrity.
• The manual export process is time-consuming, as it only allows to export a single address book at a time.
• It may require technical support.

Step 5: The software displays a preview of all converted mailbox items. Select GroupWise Address Book from the preview window.

NOTE: You can also select other mailbox items you want to convert to Outlook profile.

Step 6: Click Save on Home menu.

Step 7: In the Save As dialog box, choose Outlook Profile, and then select Next.

NOTE: The software also allows saving contacts selectively in CSV format.

Conclusion

You can choose to manually export GroupWise Address Book to Microsoft Outlook. For this, you’ll need to export the Address Book into NAB format. Open a spreadsheet and convert the NAB file to CSV file format. The CSV file format can be imported into Outlook.

However, the manual process can be tedious and time-consuming. Also, novices may require technical assistance to complete the manual process.
